Boosting Your Ability to Connect with Your Kids

Tips on how to connect with your kids even though you’re all so different!

Tip #1:  BE CURIOUS
  • The best mindset for connection is one of wanting to discover who your kids are (vs. assuming we know everything or putting them into set mold)
  • Practical Action: at least once a day try to ask an open ended question
Tip #2:  BE PRESENT
  • Parents tend to multi-task; this extends to how we connect with our kids and hinders connection
  • Practical Action: engage in the connecting power pose - where you get down and position yourself eye level with your kid.
Tip #3:  BE INVITING
  • Parents are pros at saying no. also say no when kids ask to help or be part of what we are doing but we want to create a culture of being a team and doing things together. if you wait to let them help you when they're old enough to be fully competent, they may no longer be interested.
  • Allow kids to help you creates a sweet bond and worth the sacrifice of a few more minutes on the task
  • Practical Action: invite your kids - do you want to help? (different from chores)
