Boosting Your Patience
Tips on how to keep your cool with your kids.
Tip #1: Identify your triggers, then tackle just one
Tip #1: Identify your triggers, then tackle just one
- Awareness is key, what are some patterns and commonality in times where you tend to lose your cool?
- Pick just one of those areas, and think of ideas/strategies to help you react better in that one situation. be intentional - not just “wishing” and “hoping” to be more patience
- Example: feeling pressured to make a decision when distracted
Tip #2: Set Age-appropriate expectations and make sure to communicate what they are
- Consider the difference between childishness and foolishness - it helps you pick and choose battles
- Communicate and get on same page as to expectations - often times we are enabling kids not to meet our unspoken expectations (asking kids to clean room example)
Tip #3: Allow yourself to be human
- Maybe losing patience can help us realize some areas in our own lives we need to address
- Be kind to yourself when you mess up, this helps you extend kindness to others
- Learn to apologize to your kids
- All this is a great model for kids, and creates a culture of patience and graciousness within the family.
